The Mithraeum in Rožanec is one of the most attractive archaeological monuments in Slovenia. The ambient of the temple in the forest of Judovje above Rožanec only adds to the mysticism of the cult of Mithra. The carvings were carved on the rock of an abandoned rock quarry active in antiquity near the end of the 2nd century.

Mithraeum sometimes spelled Mithreum, is a large or small Mithraic temple, erected in classical antiquity by the worshippers of Mithras. Most Mithraea can be dated between 100 B.C. and A.D. 300, mostly in the Roman Empire. It is a religion that is founded on a cyclic exchange of life and death, the struggle between good and evil, and the power of salvation through sacrifice. Archaeological digs have shown that the original level of the entire room was about 75 cm lower than it is today, the remains of firewood show that fire was used in rituals.
